Praised by AllMusic as "one of the finest soul albums of the early '70s," "Starting All Over Again" was the Stax debut from Chicago soul vocal duo (and cousins) Mel & Tim, released in 1972 on Stax Records. Mel Hardin and Tim McPherson rose to fame in 1969 with the hit "Backfield in Motion," on Gene Chandler’s Bamboo label. The cousins signed a deal with Stax soon after, where they went to work on the “Starting All Over” album produced by Phillip Mitchell and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. The album's title track became a Top Five R&B smash single, spending an impressive 20 weeks on the Billboard charts. Two decades later, the song hit the charts again when Hall & Oates covered it. Mel & Tim performed at the late-1972 charity concert Wattstax and were featured in the documentary film of the same name, singing “I May Not Be What You Want.” The duo released a self-titled album in 1973, their final commercial release.
ABOUT STAX RECORDS
Stax Records, now owned by Concord, was founded by Jim Stewart in 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee.
