Bell was among a small group of musical artists who signed with Stax Records in the early 1960s, shortly after it was established in a shuttered movie theater. As the first male solo act signed to Stax, Bell played a pivotal role in ushering in the genre known as Southern soul. His solo debut, 1961's self-penned weeper "You Don't Miss Your Water," would provide the template for the Southern soul ballad and helped launch Stax to national prominence. The song would be covered by a remarkable range of artists over the years, from John Lee Hooker to the Byrds, Brian Eno to Jerry Lee Lewis.

1969's Bound to Happen was the last-and, collaboration between William Bell and Booker T. Jones. Jones produced and arranged the album, with the MGs and the Memphis Horns playing backup. Bell and Jones wrote most of the tracks together. The track highlights include "I Forgot to Be Your Lover," Bell's biggest Stax hit, “My Whole World is Falling Down,” and William’s version of “Born Under a Bad Sign.”

More recently, Bell has been the recipient of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation’s R&B Pioneer Award and a BMI Songwriter’s Award. He is also a member of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame. In 2020, he became an NEA National Heritage Fellow, and he continues to write, produce and record. Bell’s most recent album This Is Where I Live was awarded with a GRAMMY® in 2016.
