Strongly held false beliefs are hard to change – and more intelligent people are more adept at finding reasons to dismiss inconvenient new evidence. Tali Sharot, Associate Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, explores the implications for changing minds: for example, rather than try to argue against a parent’s belief that vaccines cause autism, it can be more effective to bolster their belief in the effectiveness of vaccines at preventing disease.
