On most of the road tests in the world, you will be required to reverse stall park - back into a parking space. If there is designated parking at the licensing centre, you will back into the space at the beginning of your licence exam in preparation for the test. This manoeuvre will give you some practice and help to ease your tension somewhat. When your return from your drive, you again will reverse into the space.
By backing into the parking stall before commencing your road test, you can simply drive out to begin your test. At the end of the road test when you've got control of your jitters and developed a rapport with the driving examiner, you--most of the time--will be required to back into the parking space at the licensing centre.
Set up is the most important part for backing into a parking space. And before practicing perpendicular, bay, or stall parking, practice backing up. Hire some 36" (1m) pylons from the local shop and go to an empty parking lot. There. practice straight line backing, backing around corners and reverse Figure "8s". When you are comfortable with all of that, then begin practicing reverse stall parks. As well, the practice of slow-speed manoeuvres will translate into your overall driving.
When reversing into a stall work to keep your vision up; do not look down at the lines. If you’er obsessed with looking at the lines, parking will be incrementally more difficult because your vision and focus are in the wrong place. If at all possible, try to park off another vehicle – that is the easiest. Keep in mind that hazard and obstacles and landmarks are one-and-the-same! When you pull up in preparation to park take note of the landmarks around your vehicle and use these as reference points to park your vehicle.
When you drive into a parking bay, or set up for straight-line, or angle backing position the vehicle so you--the driver--are at the ½ way point of the parking space immediately proceeding the space into which you wish to park. At that juncture, turn the wheel and either drive into the space, or position the vehicle so that you can back into the space.
For reverse perpendicular parking, position the vehicle approximately 3’ from the other parked vehicles and drive so you—the driver—are at the mid-point of the 2nd space past the space into which you wish to park. Put the vehicle into reverse and activate your turn signal. Conduct a 360° scan before starting reverse motion. Turn the steering wheel all the way in the direction of the parking space and begin backing. When the vehicle is almost straight in the space, look forward out the front windshield to determine of the vehicle is straight and turn the steering wheel back 1 ½ turns so the wheels are straight. Continue to reverse until the front of the vehicle off which you are parking lines up with the front of your vehicle.
Good luck on your road test!!
