Nespresso U Commercial

This is a spec ad I made for the Nespresso U machine.

Coming across their products in stores every so often, I’ve been fascinated by their brand concept and marketing approach, offering a luxurious, convenient yet personal coffee experience, built upon stylish machines and accessories.

I challenged myself to create an advertisement that demonstrates the elegance and simplicity of their coffee ecosystem as a creative exercise, with an added modern twist.

As with the Dalgona Coffee video, this video was super fun to conceptualise and create, but not without challenges. I was inspired by youtuber Daniel Schiffer and his creative use of household items to make product videos.

We set up two sheets of black construction paper propped up against a mini tripod stand, which served as the main backdrop which all the shots had to be constrained to. For both the key and fill lights, we made use of portable desk lights from GadgetMix, and shifted them when necessary. Aside from limited space, one of the main issues was with lighting intensity. In the S-Log picture profile, the lights were not sufficiently bright to illuminate the 2 stops of overexposure required to allow for maximum dynamic range and greater flexibility in post. This resulted in some grainy slow motion footage. The coffee capsules were rotated against a green background, keyed and further animated in post-production to give the illusion of them flying through the air.
