My doctor says I have whiplash associated disorder. What does that mean?
Hi there. I’m Nova Scotia car accident lawyer John McKiggan. If you have been in a car accident and your doctor says you have whiplash associated disorder it is important to know how that will affect your compensation claim.
Whiplash Associated Disorder is a diagnosis used by the medical community to describe connective tissue or muscle related injuries that are caused by acceleration/deceleration trauma. This is usually referred to as a WAD injury.
There are 4 grades or levels of Whiplash Associated disorder
WAD 0 No complaints about the neck. No physical signs. Basically it means you haven’t suffered any injury that affects your neck or spine.
WAD 1 is subjective complaints of pain, stiffness or tenderness in your neck. But no physical signs.
WAD 2 is a Neck complaint with musculoskeletal signs. Musculoskeletal signs include decreased range of motion and point tenderness.
WAD 3 Means a neck injury with complaints of pain and neurological signs. Neurological signs include decreased or absent deep tendon reflexes, weakness or sensory deficits.
WAD 4 Means Neck complaints and a fracture or dislocation to your spine.
