The Doorway — Why Every Jewish Home Has a Mezuzah

On every doorpost.

'U'ketavtam al mezuzot beitecha u'vish'arecha' — 'and you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates' (Devarim 6:9). The two paragraphs of Shema, rolled into a small scroll, placed in a case, affixed with a brachah to the right side of every doorway in a Jewish home.

The Talmud teaches (Menachot 33b, in Onkelos's beautiful parable): an earthly king places his guards outside and stays safe inside; Hashem places His name on the doorposts and guards His people from outside.

Hashem stands at the entrance with us.
