Why We Eat Dairy on Shavuot — 4 Classical Reasons
Why do Jews eat dairy — cheesecake, blintzes, milk, honey — on Shavuot?
The Rema, in his classic gloss on the Shulchan Aruch (OC 494:3), simply records: 'The custom is to eat dairy foods on the first day of Shavuot.' But why?
Four classical reasons:
1. **Kashrut wasn't yet known.** Before matan Torah, Israel didn't have the laws of shechita and forbidden mixtures. After receiving the Torah, their existing meat was suddenly forbidden until they could properly Temple service and kasher their vessels — so the immediate meal was dairy. (Cited in Sha'arei Teshuvah on OC 494.)
2. **The gematria.** Chalav (חלב — milk) = chet(8) + lamed(30) + bet(2) = 40. Moshe spent 40 days on Sinai receiving the Torah. (Bach OC 494; Aruch HaShulchan 494:5.)
3. **Torah is sweet.** 'D'vash v'chalav tachat l'shonech' — 'honey and milk under your tongue' (Shir HaShirim 4:11). Chazal compare Torah to milk and honey.
4. **Lightness and joy.** Dairy is lighter than meat — fitting the joy and purity of the festival of receiving the Torah. (Mishna Berurah 494:12.)
Four reasons. All beautiful. All classical. All delicious.
