Last summer, when bushfires took out power poles and wires in regional areas, it literally became a matter of survival for some households when they lost the power needed to run their water pumps.

Now, amidst the rebuilding, energy networks are making it possible for homes to have their own independent energy source - it's called standalone power - but consumer advocates say outdated regulation is holding back progress.
