Communist-era Spying Rooms Found Next to Slovenian Tourist Attraction

Four old spying rooms have been discovered next to Slovenia's Postojna Cave, one of the country's major tourist attractions.
Located behind the back wall of a hotel close to the cave entrance, the rooms were found during renovation work. They lead directly to the part of the cave used to store the trains that take tourists through the cave system. The rooms were concealed behind a solid steel door that had to be broken open as there was no key on the premises. Inside, old furniture and telephone equipment blanketed in dust suggest the rooms have probably not been used for decades. The spying rooms were probably constructed around 1969 when the hotel was being built. There was no humidity in the rooms, making them an excellent place to store sensitive equipment. Experts say the rooms must have been used by the secret police before Slovenia's independence in 1991. The rooms were likely used for the surveillance of possible political opponents in communist Yugoslavia, and/or listening to phone conversations of hotel guests. Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito had stayed in the hotel in the past.
