MUMMY Burial Site Uncovered in Egypt

An Egyptian ancient burial shaft and a mummification workshop were discovered 30 metres underground, near the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo.

The burial shaft is over 2,000 years old and it is believed to date back to the Saite-Persian period, approximately 664-404 BC.
Hundreds of small stone statues, jars, and vessels used in the mummification process were all found inside the burial chambers.

The most significant artifact is considered to be a gilded silver mask, only the second such item.

Archaeologists are hoping that this discovery will provide fresh insight into the process of mummifying.
