Bhagavad Gita - A Walkthrough - Chapter 1

In this series I will be unpacking the concepts of the Bhagavad Gita. My inspiration for the series came from the audiobook by Jack Hawley - The Bhagavad Gita a Walkthrough for Westerners. I will be referencing Jack’s book as well as other Bhagavad Gita resources found online. I’ve included relevant links in the description below. This series will be my further exploration and personal understanding of the Gita. I hope you find this to be beneficial for you and your personal journey.

Chapter 1 - THE DESPONDENCY OF ARJUNA

To set the stage. The Bhagavad Gita is a chapter within a larger story, the Mahabharata. This chapter conveys a conversation between the Divine and a Prince named Arjuna, and during this conversation Arjuna is given the answer to the ultimate question: What is the meaning of life?

The story takes place on a battlefield as a great war is about to begin. Krishna is the guide and charioteer for his dear friend Arjuna. Arjuna is a Prince who is at war with his Cousin. I n this war Arjuna represents the divine virtues such as truth, justice, right action and compassion while his Cousin represents the 3 gates to hell which is desire, greed and anger.

This war represents a metaphor for the war each of us faces in our daily lives. Making matters complicated for Arjuna is the fact that within the army of his Cousin are many of his beloved teachers, family and friends including his grandfather – the field commander Bheeshma.

As the war is about to begin Arjuna asks Krishna to draw the chariot to a position where he could view both the armies. As his eyes fell upon many of his beloved people within the army of his enemy, Arjuna falls into despair and drops his weapons. Slumped in defeat and sorrow Arjuna declares – He will not fight.

Now it is worth noting at this point that Arjuna is actually a great and renowned warrior. He has a powerful army on his side. He has a good chance of winning, but he doesn’t see the cost of lives lost on both sides as being worth the cost of any goal.

“I would not kill them, even for three worlds; why then for this poor earth? It matters not if I myself am killed.”

It is at this moment of Arjunas greatest despair that Krishna assumes his true role as the ultimate teacher.
