When King Shantanu passed on, as per their agreement, the sons he had with Satyavati became next in line to the throne. Their first-born son was appointed the new King of Hastinapur. However, the new King died in a battle before he produced any heirs. Their second son was then appointed King, however he was still a child so Bhishma acted as his regent.

When the King came of age Satyavati and Bhisma decided to get him married so that he could produce heirs. The King of Kashi was having a groom choosing contest for his daughters. He had invited all the eligible Kings and princes, however due to a past dispute, the King of Hastinapur was not invited.

Bhishma was insulted by the omission and with the permission of Satyavati went to Kashi to win the princesses for his brother. Bhishma gathered the 3 princesses into his chariot and challenged the suiters to win them back. The Kings and princes gave chase and a fierce battle ensued. But they were no match for Bhishma. He fended off their attacks easily. One suiter however, King Shalva, remained in chase for the longest and fought the hardest, trying desperately to win back the princesses. Bhishma destroyed his carriage, leaving him humiliated, but spared his life.

The 3 Princesses: Amba, Ambika and Ambalika were brought to Hastinapur and offered to the King for marriage. The eldest princess, Amba, appealed to Satyavati. She was in love with Shalva, the King who pursued Bhishma the longest.

On Satyavati’s request, Bhishma allowed her to return to Shalva. However, in the years to come, Amba would play a pivotal part in the life of Bhishma. The two remaining princesses Ambika and Ambalika were married to the King. Sadly, the young King died of an illness before he could produce any heirs.

Satyavati was troubled, the kingdom was left without any lineage. She appealed to Bhishma to take up the throne and to take his brother's wives as his own. “Mother” he replied. You above all others know of my vow to never take the crown and to remain celibate all my life. I will not break this oath.”

Satyavati then thought of another solution to the problem they faced. She decided to reveal a secret that she had carried for many years.
