Today I spoke with Larry Jordan, who grew up Catholic but began to question his beliefs and worldview in adulthood, and ultimately deconverted but embraced a spiritual perspective focused on how we are interconnected to others and to the world around us.

We touched on many topics, including:

• As an adult, diving deep into learning about Christianity, Catholicism, and the other world religions.
• Selling most of his possessions in order to fully serve the poor and needy.
• Rethinking his position on the LGBTQ community.
• Realizing there were endless variations of Christianity and that each of their beliefs and traditions had evolved over time, yet each branch of Christianity sees their version as the traditional and correct one.
• Going through an angry phase as he exited Christianity.
• Studying and appreciating the difference between Eastern and Western worldviews and philosophy.
• Diving deep into science with its focus on evidence and mysticism with its focus on experience.
• Reshaping his perspective toward a oneness, an interconnection with the universe.
• Addressing the fact that many people have had what they consider to be mystical, transcendent experiences.
• The importance of having enough humility to reach out of our worldview comfort zone and admit that others with divergent beliefs might be right -- or at least have helpful insights.
• Unpacking the implications of the idea that everyone's related and everything's connected, including the idea that what hurts others also hurts us and the need to provide the greatest benefit to the most amount of people.
• Dropping the need to have a label for ourselves and our belief system.
• Admitting we believe things because they're comfortable, not because they're sensible.
• Realizing that as part of the total indoctrination process, many people have been trained to think that if their belief system were incorrect, reality would be chaos, there would be no morality, and life might not even feel like it was worthy living anymore -- and that in such a mentality, believers would rather not know if they were wrong.
• The importance of remaining humble and admitting that others might be right as we learn more about the universe and our existence.
