Johnny Gandelsman, Conversation with the Artist
Johnny Gandelsman talks with Anne McLean of the Library’s Music Division following his solo violin recital May 13, 2022, presented by the Library in cooperation with Washington Performing Arts. Their conversation centers on his This is America project: 24 works for solo violin, commissioned from a richly diverse group of composers, that offer a broad vista for new music in our country. Discussing the five commissions he chose to highlight in this recital, by Olivia Davis, Clarice Assad, Anjna Swaminathan, Rhiannon Giddens and Marika Hughes, he mentions his charge to composers to “reflect on the times we find ourselves in.” He talks about the challenges and rewards involved in working in unfamiliar styles, particularly the Hindustani and Carnatic violin tradition encountered in Anjna Swaminathan’s Surrender to the Adventure, and also about how creating the project changed his life as a musician, and the role of the artist in today’s society.
