The Zombies, Butcher's Tale (live), Fox Theater, Oakland, CA, Sept. 13, 2019 (4K)

The Zombies play their song "Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)" live in concert at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California on September 13, 2019. Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914) originally appeared on the band's 1968 album Odessey And Oracle, which they played in its entirety from start to finish. The song, set in the trenches during a battle in World War I, depicts a soldier's trauma in the face of the horrors of war. To the band's surprise, their label decided to release the track as a single, on the premise that it was timely given the rise in anti-war sentiment toward the Vietnam War. However, unsurprisingly for a song described by many as "haunting," "creepy" and "strange," Butcher's Tale did not chart. The song was written and sung by bass player Chris White, his only Zombies track as lead vocalist; he was chosen because his "trembly" voice fit the song's mood.

The Zombies' current lineup is Colin Blunstone (lead vocals), Rod Argent (keyboards), Steve Rodford (drums), Tom Toomey (guitar), and Søren Koch (bass). Joining them onstage for the Odessey And Oracle songs were original band members Hugh Grundy and Chris White, as well as Darian Sahanaja (mellotron/harmonium) and Vivian White (backing vocals). As on the original album, White provided the song's vocals, accompanied only by a harmonium.
