John Paul White, formerly of the duo The Civil Wars, plays "This Isn't Gonna End Well" live in concert at The Chapel in San Francisco, California on June 16, 2019. This Isn't Gonna End Well, which appears on JPW's new solo album, The Hurting Kind, was co-written with the legendary Bobby Braddock, who is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and has written 13 number-one hits in his storied career. The album version of this song is a duet featuring Lee Ann Womack. JPW has said this about the song: "Lee Ann straddles that line between the country world, the Americana world, and the crooner thing. I don’t think she’s super easy to pin down. With her voice she can make anything sound country if she wants to. I did not envision it as a duet at first but once it was done, and I was playing it down and thinking about it for the record, it made perfect sense. I loved the idea that it wasn’t just a one-sided conversation. Both people knew it was a horrible idea and neither one could pull out of it."

In 2008, John Paul White and Joy Williams formed The Civil Wars, a critically-acclaimed duo that went on to win four Grammy Awards, including Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. To the great sadness of their many fans, The Civil Wars disbanded in 2014. Since that time, JPW has released two country/folk solo albums: Beulah in 2016 and The Hurting Kind in 2019. Joining JPW onstage at The Chapel were Shonna Tucker (bass), Adam Morrow (guitar), Reed Watson (drums), Kimi Samson (fiddle), and Todd Beene (pedal steel guitar).

John Paul White grew up in tiny Loretto, Tennessee, and now lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from Muscle Shoals.
