A Patient with Peripheral Vascular Disease: Irene's Story

Irene noticed a very sharp pain in her calf when she walked. Her doctor diagnosed Peripheral Vascular Disease (also known as Peripheral Arterial Disease). She had three surgeries, but none provided long-term relief.

On the recommendation of Dr. Daniel Walsh, a vascular surgeon at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Irene enrolled in a clinical trial that used her own stem cells to help restore circulation in her legs. Irene believes that if she hadn't done anything, she would have lost her foot. Irene says that the trial "has worked miracles for me."
