Peripheral Arterial Disease and the 6 P’s
Peripheral arterial disease lecture usually end up with your clinical instructors bringing out the six P’s that are used to assess if the limb is appropriately receiving oxygen or not, and it’s always the lower limbs that are involved due to the time it takes for oxygen to reach that part.

Narrowing of the blood vessels due to various causes like atherosclerosis prevents blood flow to the lower extremities which results to low oxygen; therefore, the lower the oxygen in the legs, the worse the six P’s will manifest.
From the six P’s, there are two P’s that always come out on the NCLEX because they are the priority assessments because these two P’s may result to amputation of a limb.
