The BP Company Presents - The Power to Fly: The History and Development of the Flying Machine
A 1954 20-minute colour sound animated film which traces the history of aviation from pre-history through to the jet aircraft age. Beginning with early concepts of flying machines and tower jumpers, the film progresses on to the work of Leonardo Da Vinci with animations of the flying machines of
Besnier and De Lana followed by the work of Sir George Cayley, W. S. Henson's Aerial Steam Carriage, John Stringfellow, Hiram Maxim, Otto Lilienthal, Octave Chanute, the Wright Brothers among others.
Following the major impact of the Wrights on the development of European aviation, the film then reviews the advances in aircraft design and performance during the First World War, the early years of civil passenger flights and the evolution of civil airliners, the leading edge slot and variable pitch propeller. The Second World War accelerated the development of aircraft design and engine performance, the film concluding with the beginnings of the jet age.
Produced in conjunction with BP Aviation Service, a Halas and Batchelor Cartoon directed by Bob Privett with commentary by Maurice Denham
