My Favorite Things Derek Trucks Band

Here is a real treat, the Derek Trucks Band (DTB) performed at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival on Oct. 25, 2007 in a radio studio hall with superb acoustics. The recording for German radio (Hessischer Rundfunk) was broadcast on FM radio a week later, and the audio is excellent. The highlight of the show was “My Favorite Things” originally a show-tune which later became a jazz classic thanks to John Coltrane. I’ve heard several excellent versions of this song by the DTB. This version stands out due to the great audio quality, the low-keyed approach, Kofi Burbridge’s solos on flute and organ, and the presence of Count M’Butu on percussion.

Count M’Butu was born as Harold Jones, but was given the name Count M’Butu by Col. Bruce Hampton and he stuck with it. Count M’Butu was well known on the Southern music scene playing with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Phish, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and of course the Derek Trucks Band. He studied music in Nigeria and also learned from Santana percussionist Armando Peraza.

It was my good fortune to be in attendance for this show. At the show I met up with two musical buddies from the Netherlands. One was Paul Harvey from Dutch radio, whom hardcore DTB fans will remember as the radio personality who first brought the DTB to Europe. That was for the Steelin’ & Sliding Tour he organized for Dutch radio. The tour featured among others, Buddy Cage and Sonny Landreth. The other music buddy was Mark Harmsma, a fine musician in his own right (with a successful day career ;-). Mark was Derek’s guitar tech during the Steelin’ & Slidin’ tour.

It was an unusual audience for the Derek Trucks Band. Prior to their appearance the major jazz saxophonist Ted Nash had performed his suite with the topnotch Hessischer Rundfunk orchestra. Many in the audience had come for that, and weren’t familiar with the DTB. A few did leave because of the volume, but at the end you can hear the jazz crowd’s enthusiastic response.

FAVORITE THINGS
I’ve had this great audio since 2007, but I don’t like simply uploading audio with a static photo. Recently I was listening to it and got the idea to back the audio with visuals of a few of my favorite things in the background.

Man did I end up going down a rabbit hole. I didn’t even scratch the surface of the musicians I would have liked to have included. Nor did I include any books or authors, no paintings or painters, no places, plants, fruits, vegetables, flowers, natural wonders, animals (except for Gabby the little firecracker from the Dog Show.) Even picking just a few sport highlights and movies was difficult.

Here’s a bit of what to expect:
1. Big Wave Surfing, search YouTube for endless amazing videos.
2. I knew I had to include a bit of Markus Eder’s Ultimate Ski Run, if you enjoy this sample, here is a link to the whole clip:
https://www.schneehoehen.de/artikel/markus-eder-the-ultimate-run
3. So many fantastic NFL highlights, but I decided to share a clip of Patrick Mahomes
4. Michael Jordan doing the impossible on the basketball court.
5. Dirk Nowitzki -- one of the greatest team players in NBA history.
6. Tiger Woods’ fist pumping awesomeness.
7. Cristiano Ronaldo mindboggling footwork.
8. Gabby the dog (pound for pound) perhaps the best athlete of them all ;-)
9. Baseball, some amazing fielding.
10.Muhammed Ali, the greatest of all time.
11.Bruce Lee, dito.
12.Bull’s eye contortionist archery – absolutely mind blowing.

Then comes the musicians (Allman Brothers, Duane Allman, Wilson Pickett, Mike Bloomfield, Santana, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Blues Brothers, Barbara Dennerlein, Jimmy Smith, Matthias Bublath, Larry Young, Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, Chuck Leavell, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Focus, Steve Winwood, Son House, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Robert Johnson, Ronny Jordan, Jimmy Herring, Mike Seal, Magic Sam, B.B. King, Etta James, John McLaughlin, Charlie Christian, Buddy Emmons, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley, Bo Diddly, Billy Cobham, Jeff Beck, Dave Brubeck, Khruangbin, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Oteil Burbridge, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Steely Dan, Tony Joe White, Tears for Fears, Style Council, Prefab Sprout, Pink Floyd, Stg. Peppers, Revolver, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Seals, Dash Crofts, James Brown, Johnny Carson, David Bowie, followed by a few movies. I colorized and restored many of video clips and photos, and included titles for some that might not be familiar to everyone. I wish I could have included so many more…

Hope you enjoy it!
