Seals and Crofts ** Fire and Vengeance ** with Louie Shelton on Guitar

“Fire and Vengeance” is the latest song in my playlist: “Songs that deserve a music video.” These are great songs which weren’t necessarily huge hits -- often album tracks that are unknown to the wider public.

It’s a labor of love for me. These clips have little chance of gaining a wide audience because these songs are already available on YouTube. So far, artificial intelligence isn’t capable of appreciating that these reworked “music videos” are hidden gems with additional visual charms :-)

This particular song is a bit of a paradox. Seals & Crofts are best known for their hits such as “Summer Breeze,” “Diamond Girl,” and “Humming Bird,” and aren’t generally associated with hard rock music (thanks to soft rock radio stations.)

In reality, they played rock too, and this particular song, “Fire and Vengeance” is a particularly good example which features a smokin’ guitar solo by the great Louie Shelton who also produced their best selling albums.

Here is the somewhat paradoxical thing about this particular song. Seals and Crofts were known for exploring spiritual themes in their music, inspired by the Baha’i Faith. Often these were beautiful intimate songs with acoustic guitar and mandolin. “Fire and Vengeance” is their reflection on a passage from the Baha’i Scriptures, from a book entitled “The Hidden Words.” Surprisingly, it was delivered in a rock song.

It’s a simple but profound message they convey: life’s trails and tests are an opportunities for the soul to grow and advance spiritually. Like John Lennon’s “All You Need is Love” this song too is an anthem for LOVE.

The bridge contains this great line:
“I want you to know, wherever you go. The world is a classroom
Just to teach your soul all about love.”
