From Software Engineer to Software Engineer

I worked as a software engineer for more than 10 years now, and I have to say that my job is always different, and not because there are new technologies coming out every day, but because as software engineers we have to continuously adapt to new challenges that pop up on a daily basis.

Being a software engineer for most people means being good at writing code, while being good at writing code is definitely a pre-requisite there is more. How much of your day is spent writing code and how much instead goes into meetings, design sessions, code reviews?

Writing software is part of a creative process and at the end of it, many engineers develop a sort of attachment to that piece of code. Receiving feedback even if constructive can be perceived as criticism.

This pushed me to evolve and learn more about people, to understand how to communicate, how to see when feedback is necessary or when it can be avoided, to lead by example.

It’s more important to be a nice person than a brilliant programmer. There are technologies that will be created tomorrow so you are always on time to become an expert on the next programming language.

So this video is to say that doesn’t matter how good you are at writing code if you are not a nice person and people don’t work well with you. Being technical is only one aspect of our job (and probably is the easiest).
