Open Space: DDG | Mass Appeal

"It's just weird shit, bro," says rapper and YouTube personality DDG of skits like "If My Dick Was a Person," which he released in 2015. "It's a lot of weird shit bro. I'm like, 'Why did I make that?' But I keep em up there."

Hailing from Pontiac, Michigan, a small town 30 minutes from Detroit, DDG's social handles always repped his hometown: PontiacMadeDDG.

"Back in high school I started doing a few skits or whatever on YouTube," he recalled during a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ. "This was before the music, before everything." His friends liked them so he started posting more. He made a bunch of YouTube channels that grew into the millions of views. He then started dropping a few diss tracks. "Damn," he said to himself. "This is hitting more than my blog. I must be fire!"

At age 18 he decided to take music more seriously and drop some "real songs." His cousin invited him to Atlanta where he had contacted the producer Zaytoven. "I went out there, got up with Zaytoven. Got a few beats. Dropped the 'Balenciaga' joint, hit a million. I kinda put it on hold cause I was making so much money on YouTube. I'm like, ''Let me focus on this and secure the bag." He soon dropped out of college and moved to L.A.

"I had kinda dug a hole for myself with the diss tracks," he admits. "Let me stop doing these diss tracks and let me start doing some real music." He linked with Famous Dex to release a track called "Lettuce" that blew up quickly. "They rockin' with it a little bit. Let me hit em with some lyrical stuff. After that I said 'Let me hit em with a real banger." Since then-straight bangers!
