Main Source: 25 Years of "Breaking Atoms"
For our latest video, Mass Appeal linked with Main Source to discuss the last 25 years of Breaking Atoms.
After linking with Vinyl Me, Please, Main Source and the vinyl reissued the 25th anniversary "Breaking Atoms" on vinyl. Mass Appeal was on deck to document the concert and spoke with the group before they hit the stage.
“We were before our time,” says Large Professor of his pioneering work with Main Source, the NYC hip hop group that celebrated a the release of their 1991 debut album, Breaking Atoms with a recent concert at perennial downtown Manhattan nightspot S.O.B.’s. Main Source’s debut album is chiefly remembered for its groundbreaking sample-based production, created with the then-state-of-the-art SP-1200 sampling drum machine.
The album also launched the career of upstart rapper Nasty Nas, who cemented his reputation with a legendary verse on the Main Source posse cut “Live at the Barbeque,” establishing his name in the rap game forevermore. “Fuck them fuckin’ papers and statistics and all of that,” says Large Professor. “That street shit is real, man.”
