Morpeth rings in the King

IT’S Coronation Day - and the bells were ringing out at Morpeth this morning.

The Clock Tower chimes sounded to acclaim the new monarch, King Charles III.

The hour-long celebratory peal began at 9.30am in anticipation of the service beginning at Westminster Cathedral at 11am and the crowning at Noon.

Morpeth has a bellringing tradition dating back 300 years.

The 60ft high Clock Tower is one of only eight freestanding secular bell towers in Great Britain.

In addition to national occasions like today, the bells are rung for events such as the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering, Fair Day, Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day and New Year. They will also ring out for the Mayormaking ceremony next Wednesday and will sound a three-hour Mayor’s Peal next Saturday.

The bellringers are all volunteers. To learn more visit: https://www.morpethbellringers.org.uk/
