The Forgotten Hero of Iwo Jima

You've seen this photo—the flag raising at Iwo Jima. It became THE symbol of American victory in World War II. One of the six Marines in that photo was Ira Hayes, a Pima Native American. After the war, he was paraded across the United States as a national hero. Politicians used his image. Newspapers celebrated him.

But when the spotlight faded, Ira returned to his reservation in Arizona, facing poverty, discrimination, and severe PTSD. He struggled with alcoholism and trauma. America had moved on. Ira Hayes died alone at age 32, just 10 years after raising that flag. This is the tragic story of how America treats its Native heroes.
