Why Were These War Heroes Denied Citizenship?

*Note:
At 0:20, I state Native Americans were "denied citizenship rights until 1948." More precisely: The 1924 Indian Citizenship Act granted federal citizenship, but VOTING rights were restricted by individual states until 1948 (Arizona) and 1962 (New Mexico). Thanks to viewers for keeping the history accurate!

About the video:
During World War II, Japan had cracked every single American military code.

Then the U.S. recruited 400+ Navajo men to create an unbreakable code based on their native language. Japanese code-breakers couldn't decipher it.

The Navajo Code Talkers were crucial to American victories at Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa. They literally saved thousands of American lives.

But when these war heroes returned home, they couldn't vote in Arizona or New Mexico. Native Americans were still denied citizenship rights in those states until 1948.

They saved America but weren't considered full Americans.
