Rishi Sunak vows to combat antisemitism amid rising incidents in UK

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday (October 16) that it was a priority to keep the Rafah border crossing from Gaza open.

Speaking during a visit to a Jewish school in London, Sunak said that he had spoken to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to try to ease the humanitarian situation at the border, and that British navy ships had been sent to the region too.

Sunak also emphasised his support for the Jewish community in the United Kingdom, telling students that there was “no place in our society” for antisemitism, and that he would do everything possible to stamp it out.

Sunak said on Friday (October 13) there had been a "disgusting" rise in antisemitic incidents following the surprise attack on Israel by the Hamas terror group on October 7, after London's Metropolitan Police said had been 105 reports of antisemitic incidents and 75 antisemitic offences between September 29 and October 12, compared with 14 incidents and 12 offences in the same period a year ago.
