Israeli forces prepare for 'next step' in Israel-Hamas war

Israel's defence minister said on Monday (October 24) his country was "preparing thoroughly for the next step", as troops massed on the Gaza border for a planned invasion. Yoav Gallant toured the shores of Israel's southern border and visited the Ashdod Navy base, where he reviewed naval operations.

Israel pounded hundreds of targets in Gaza from the air on Monday while its soldiers fought Hamas terrorists during raids into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

The Israeli bombardment was triggered by an Oct. 7 cross-border assault on Israeli communities by Hamas terrorists who killed 1,400 people and took more than 200 hostage - the bloodiest episode in a single day since the state of Israel was founded 75 years ago.

At least 5,087 Palestinians have been killed in two weeks of strikes, including 2,055 children, the health ministry said.
