BISTEC Hearts Academy | Tech Lead Track | Month 7 | Team Leadership Mastery

Welcome to Month 7 of the BISTEC Hearts Academy Tech Lead Track — Team Leadership Mastery: the first session of Phase 2, shifting focus from personal leadership to building and leading high-performing teams.

This session covers Tuckman's five team development stages (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, Adjourning) with practical guidance on the leader's role at each stage. The team maturity assessment module provides a five-dimension framework for evaluating your team's development across communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, accountability, and innovation.

The engineering culture section defines five pillars — Technical Excellence, Continuous Learning, Ownership, Collaboration, and Customer Focus — and shows how to translate values into specific behaviors and anti-patterns. Three real-world culture transformation case studies illustrate hero-culture to team-culture, fear-of-failure to learning-from-failure, and siloed-expertise to collective-ownership shifts.

Psychological safety draws on Amy Edmondson's framework and Google's Project Aristotle findings. The four-level model (Silent → Speak When Asked → Raise Concerns → Challenge Ideas) provides a practical diagnostic. The psychological safety playbook covers five leader behaviors, team practices, and recovery protocols.

Change management uses Kotter's 8-step framework — Create Urgency, Build Coalition, Form Vision, Enlist Volunteers, Enable Action, Generate Wins, Sustain Acceleration, Institute Change — with a focus on steps 1, 5, and 6 where tech leads have the most leverage. The change communication planning module covers audience analysis, key messages, channel selection, and feedback loops.
