Renowned ecologist Madhav Gadgil, who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s environmental discourse through his advocacy for the protection of the Western Ghats, has passed away. Gadgil chaired the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, whose landmark report recommended strict ecological safeguards for one of the world’s most fragile biodiversity hotspots. The report sparked intense political and public debate across six states, as it called for regulating mining, construction, and industrial activity to balance development with conservation. Though controversial, Gadgil’s work fundamentally changed how environmental governance, sustainable development, and people-centric conservation are discussed in India today.
