Grytviken Abandoned Whaling Station Where Ernest Shackleton is Buried

While on a Holland America's ms Prinsendam's 80-day Grand Voyage to South America and Antarctica in 2019, we stopped at South Georgia and Sandwich Islands to visit an abandoned whaling station at a port called Grytviken where the noted Ernest Shackleton is buried. His ship, the Endurance was trapped in the Antarctic ice pack where he and his crew suffered extreme hardships.

Grytviken is the whaling station made famous by Shackleton's reunion with civilization on the South Georgia and Sandwich Islands after losing his ship, the Endurance, to Antarctic pack ice in 1915.

You can see his grave site in a small cemetery overlooking the bay. Although the grave of Ernest Shackleton can be found in the little graveyard here, Grytviken is not the whaling station where he finally found help after his epic journey but rather at the nearby Stromness whaling station.
