Kaali METEORITE CRATER, the 8th LARGEST in the WORLD and it landed on a tiny ISLAND in the BALTICS!

Our summer tour of Estonia continues - after our 11KM hike out to Kiipsaare lighthouse: https://youtu.be/cB3LDNaTMI0 we drove East to take a look at the incredible Kaali Meteorite crater which is actually a group of 9 meteorite craters within a 1km radius but the largest being Kaali crater. The meteorite hit this tiny Baltic Island around 4000 thousand years ago (although scientific estimates vary greatly on this), when the meteor reached an altitude of approximately 10km it broke into pieces and fell to the Earth in fragments, the greatest of which produced this crater. The explosion removed approximately 81,000 m3 of dolomite and other rocks and formed a 7 to 8km tall, extremely hot gas flow. Vegetation was incinerated up to 6km from the impact site.

Kaali crater is the 8th largest meteor crater in the world and it just happened to land here on this tiny little Baltic Island off the mainland of Estonia. The Kaali field of meteorite craters on Saaremaa is the rarest nature wonder in Estonia, being at the same time the most spectacular in Eurasia.
