Rejection as an Artist: Why it Happens

RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu discusses the challenges of experiencing rejection as a visual artist. Rejection is everywhere there is an opportunity for artists: applying for a job, for an artist grant, from an art gallery, a juried art exhibition, and much more. Being rejected as an artist can take a mental toll on your practice as an artist and cause you to question your direction and creative decisions. Prof Lieu explains how rejection is an inherent part of being an artist, and offers actions and strategies you can employ to deal with this part of an artist's life.

Clara Lieu is an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.
