Presenting the Herbst appliance (Part 5) | Tom Nasiopoulos Orthodontist
For more info, please address questions through www.tom-nasiopoulos.gr
Here, in Part 5, I am presenting the treatment outcome of the patients whom you saw in the previous parts (1-4).
The 13-year-old-boy, (whom you saw in Parts 1-3) had a very good correction. The initial 10mm overjet has been reduced to normal, the midlines match, he has a good Class I molar and canine relationship, no crowding and no spaces. Plus, his dental and periodontal health are excellent. No teeth were extracted. The treatment lasted 25 months. He had the Herbst appliance for 12 months, followed by fixed appliances. He is now instructed to wear retainer every night for the next 18 months. After that, the retainer use will be less frequent, BUT HE MUST NEVER GIVE UP COMPLETELY THE RETAINERS! If he does, relapse will most probably occur.
The 17-year-old-girl, had also a satisfactory result. At this point, I need to EMPHASIZE that the ideal age for the casted Herbst appliance treatment is between 12-14 years!!! The lady you watched in Part 4, was quite older than that. I explained to her parents that the result we should expect would be mostly of dentoalveolar nature and very little (if any) of skeletal nature. Still, she started the treatment with a 9mm overjet and a full Class II malocclusion on her right side. There was a midline discrepancy too (see before-after photos). In my opinion, the results were quite satisfactory; she and her parents were happy as well. Midlines are corrected, the overjet has been reduced to normal, she has nice Class I molar and canine relationships in both sides, no spaces, no crowding, her dental and periodontal conditions are good. The treatment lasted 24 months while the treatment and retention protocols are similar to the ones I described for the previous patient.
Thank you for your interest.
