Demonstration: Passage, 24x18 pastel (made from field study)

Demonstration of taking a 9x6 oil field study and making a larger, 24x18 pastel studio painting from it. I really liked the little study I'd made at Zion National Park in Utah, and I thought it would make a nice, larger painting. For studio version, I didn't use any photo references, just the little study.

The oil study was made with Gamblin Artist Oil colors. For the pastel, I used a sheet of steel-grey Canson Mi-Teintes, NuPastels and Unison. I like the Canson paper for large paintings, but I do use some spray fixative between stages. (Lascaux fixative is what I used.)

The scene depicted is at the Big Bend location in Zion National Park. If you haven't been to Zion, it's worth a long visit - and many revisits!
