The Birth Of A Bowie Knife Part 2 (Making the Handle and Fitting Guard)

Making Of Bowie knife series Part 2.

This project took us longer than we expected, however we managed to get everything to fit with first time.
In this video we are at workshop with Florian and he is working with handle of Bowie.
Grip is a bit complicated and time consuming to do, as the tongue of blade has to fit in shaped frame, the reason we decided to make it this is way so that we could use D2 steel for engraving all around the frame.
Hand guard wasn't hard to make, however, most of the time goes fitting it together with blade.
After we got everything aligned it was time to shape the handles, drill them and add pins.
In Case You are wondering, Florian is filling the pins so the resin would grip the rough surface better and fit is tighter.
Once we had all the single parts together it took several hours to get everything even and square, because even though handle will be shaped later, it has to be as straight as possible so frame would be aligned with blade and grip guard would have 90 degree angle in both sides.
Before resin is applied Florian smears the blade with lubricant so it can be pulled out of sheath once resin is cured and handle can be shaped and engraved separately
