▶ New York City Police Mugshots, 1900–1910: Rare Vintage Criminal Photographs

Welcome to this fascinating collection of original photographs documenting New York City criminals at the turn of the 20th century, preserved through police mugshots and detailed arrest cards dating from roughly 1900 to 1910. Taken during a period of rapid urban growth, overcrowded tenements, and uneven policing, these images provide a rare visual insight into early modern law enforcement and city life.

The portraits were produced using the Bertillon system, an early method of criminal identification developed in the 1880s by French criminologist Alphonse Bertillon. Before fingerprints became standard practice, suspects were photographed under controlled conditions and recorded through precise body measurements, physical descriptions, scars, and distinguishing marks. Each arrest card combined photography with written data, forming one of the first systematic attempts to catalogue identity.

The individuals shown — men, women, and teenagers — were arrested for a wide range of offences, from shoplifting, burglary, and assault, to period-specific crimes such as “green goods” fraud, “badger” illegal trading, “flim-flam” confidence schemes, and counterfeit bail arrangements. Many offences reflect the informal economies and survival strategies of working-class New York.

Presented without sensationalism, these photographs offer a stark human record of crime, poverty, migration, and policing in a city struggling to impose order during the early 20th century.
