Height Shrinkage (Loss) during the Day

We're taller in the morning than the evening.

This is a typical day for Rob and shows how his height can vary from 8am through till 8pm.
(I never quite hit my usual low this day)

To find your peak morning height make sure you measure within a minute of waking up as we shrink and lose height quite fast within the first couple of hours out of bed.

Nobody really sees me at almost 5ft 9, apart from Jenny and Sookie ;)

By the time I've made myself presentable and stepped out the door, I've already shrunk a large chunk.

This is why I personally wouldn't claim out of bed height. While of course a valid measurement, most people are seeing you after being awake a few hours and you've lost a good chunk of your height from the morning.

At lunchtime, on average, most people won't lose that much more through the evening.

You can see at lunchtime my height loss is nearly complete and by dinner time I'm pretty much at my lowest height. I typically maintain that low through the evening, or at worst shrink another mm if a bit more active.

Sometimes though, I can even creep back up a mm or 2, especially if I've sat down to watch a movie or TV show.

Jobs that involve walking, standing, lifting and rotating can all cause slightly different variations in height throughtout the day - you are far more likely to shrink to your lowest height quicker as the stresses placed on the spine can accelerate the effects of daily height shrinkage (the water content of our discs reduces slightly due to the compressive forces of being upright). You may even reach an absolute low, which could be 2mm less than what you measure on less stressful days.

When we sleep (or even lie own for a period), our discs can recover, rehydrate and when we wake up again we are at our peak morning height (assuming you get 8 hours sleep like I managed in this video).

Remember this stadiometer adds 1/8th inch (2mm), my low this day was really 5ft 8.25! :) I was well hydrated so didn't reach my usual lowest which is 5ft 8.25 on stadiometer (so about 5ft 8 1/8th in reality).
