Do you need to be a classicist to understand Roman Law? [No. 86]

Does the language barrier prevent an English speaker from understanding the Roman Law? Professor Richard Epstein explores how conflicting translations can actually help a scholar discern meaning in a text. The translation of a single word can often have broad implications, but you don’t have to be a classicist to survey the various alternatives proposed by scholars.

Professor Epstein is the inaugural Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law at NYU School of Law, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and Professor of Law Emeritus and a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago.
