PUCK (closing speech in Clifford's MND)
Probably the biggest difference in my A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and other ballet versions, is that I end it as Shakespeare did, with Puck speaking directly to the audience. Getting a 14 yr-old male dancer to project his voice, w/o a microphone, was always a challenge, but all my many, many casts over the years managed it. The Portland Ballet, run by Nancy Davis and Jim Lane, has definitely changed many young lives. The new-found confidence in these dancers is great to see. A full stage, w/ orchestra, sets, lights, and costumes, is rare for most schools, and really prepares these kids for more than just ballet.
