Medieval Jewish Literacy and Learning as seen in the Cairo Genizah

The Cairo Genizah was a rich depository of Jewish documents in Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic in the Ben Ezra synagogue of that city from the sixth to the nineteenth century. Dr. Estara Arrant explains the styles of Hebrew script, how it was learned, and the resulting styles of Bibles found in the Cairo Genizah. It was the largest collection of Medieval manuscripts in the world. It was not only a storage place for documents with the name of God, but all kinds of religious and secular documents about Jewish life in the Arab world. Discovered in the late 1800s, Solomon Schechter brought much of it to the University of Cambridge where it is housed.
