Hulusi—A Chinese Ethnic Musical Instrument

Ben: "Well, I'm here in the studio with Crescent Dai to talk about this rather unusual musical instrument that we haven't had on the show before. Thanks very much for coming here today, Crescent."

Crescent: "Thank You."

Ben: "So could you please talk about this instrument?"

Crescent: "The name of this musical instrument is 'Hulusi.' It's a Chinese ethnic musical instrument existing before the Qin Dynasty. So it has a history of over two thousand years."

Ben: "And what material is this Hulusi made of?"

Crescent: "This one is made with a real 'Hulu.' The pipes underneath are made of bamboo."

Ben: "Some westerners may not be familiar with this musical instrument. So, what is this 'Hulu' or gourd?"

Crescent: "People are more familiar with the 'Hulu' in China. It comes from a plant and in some areas, people cut them in half and use them to scoop water."

Ben: "Now, these two instruments are different."

Crescent: "This one is a later design. It's made of black Sandalwood. The advantage of this one is that it's easier to preserve and its lifespan is longer compared to the real 'Hulu.'

Ben: What about this blue one?

Crescent: "This material is called cloisonné and it has the feel of enamel."

Ben: "Now this instrument is related to certain ethnic minority tribes in China."

Crescent: "This musical instrument primarily appeared in Yunnan Province and it is played by several different ethnic minority groups."

Ben: "Which ethnicities?"

Crescent: "The most typical are the Dai people. Then there are also the Miao and the Yi ethnic groups."

Ben: "Well, the clothes you are wearing today are very beautiful. Which ethnicity do they belong to?"

Crescent: "This is Miao ethnic dress."

Ben: "Crescent, could you please play a song for us?"

Crescent: "Yes, this piece is called "Jiao Huan." Today, I will play just one section of the piece."

Ben: "Great, thank you."
