Meta and Google found liable in social media addiction lawsuit

A US jury has found social media giants Meta and YouTube liable for creating products that contributed to harmful and addictive behaviour in young people.

The case was brought by a 20-year-old woman who accused the companies of intentionally addicting her to their platforms' apps, which she says led to anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal thoughts.

She has been awarded $3 million in damages, with the ruling potentially setting a precedent for similar cases.

Meta says it disagrees with the verdict and is considering its legal options.
