Four Tips for DBT Therapists About TIBs

There are a number of ways to address therapy-interfering behaviors by clinicians themselves, who should recognise and try to solve them as soon as possible.

In this presentation, Dr. Stephanie Vaughn, Psy.D., shares tips on how to overcome the fear of addressing therapy-interfering behaviors (TIBs).

Here are some highlights we’ve extracted from this video:

* Barriers to addressing TIBs may be:
* Fears of making the patient worse,
* A desire to maintain a certain image,
* Clinical training indifferent psychotherapy models,
* A high tolerance for discomfort, and
* Ignoring or invalidating the therapist’s true feelings.
* In the short term, the discomfort of addressing TIBs may pay off by preserving the therapy relationship or, in the long term, even the patient’s life.
