Rolex Daytona History & Hands on review

In this video I do a deep dive into the Rolex Daytona and it's history.
I cover four main models in this video from the 16520, 2 generations of the 116520 and the current production 116500LN.

We cover the small differences in these models and ways to tell them apart as well as collectibility and market values. There are some small differences and some larger ones that most people are likely unaware of.
Such as subdial colours, different lumes used and different materials for bezels.

In 1988 Rolex released the famous and highly desirable Zenith Daytona reference number 16520, as you can see in the video, and I have this stunning white dial here with me today to show you.
The zenith Daytona as a whole can have some striking differences which I won’t delve into here and now as this video is about the Daytona as a whole range, I could make a vid on all the different zeniths over the years, let me know in the comments if you’d like that as the next one.

The Zenith Daytona is lighter and a little thinner than the 116520 Daytona, and I must say the links / bracelet on a zenith Daytona can feel a little tinny in comparison the newer 116520 Daytona.

One of the biggest and easiest to spot differences is the chrono sub dials, the zenith Daytona in steel have strikingly different coloured subdials which are immediately clear as when compared to the Rolex movement Daytona.

The 116520 was available like the 16520 with either black or white dial, both of these have steel chronosub dials which is the easiest way to tell them apart from a zenith Daytona. This was Rolex's first in house self-winding Daytona and it was incredibly well received by the watch buying public. However these were available for as little as £6000 when they first came out which is far cry from what they are trading at today.

I have both a superluminova and chroma light in my collection and both are here today to show you the difference.

As you can see the lume on the superluminova is green and on the chromalight is blue.

So The final watch in the Daytona range and the current production model is the Rolex Daytona ceramic reference 116500LN. This watch was released in 2016 to replace the 116520.

The Ceramic Daytona was incredibly well received and is an absolutely stunning chronograph, it has a few changes and improvements on the previous model, the most obvious change is the black ceramic bezel.

Over the last decade or so Rolex have been improving their bezel game and have been moving from metal bezels such as steel seen on the previous Daytona and aluminium on the subs etc to ceramic bezels across the range, I feel this was a great move from Rolex for a couple of reasons.

Firstly the ceramic bezel is scratch resistant, one of the worst things of the steel bezel Daytona is that it picks up a lot of scratches which become pretty visible pretty quickly, and these can’t be polished out without taking off some of the enamel on the tachometer and it will start to look a bit tired.

Also, the ceramic bezel is obviously black and on the white dial the sub dials have the black again on to and it creates a lovely contrast effect, it is my favourite Daytona for this reason, it is also very wearable and versatile.
The ceramic Daytona sticks with the chroma light coating which gives us that striking blue lume at night.

This is the only model I have shown today that is current production but as we all know the waiting list is 10 years plus for this piece or indeed closed.
