Hiking Mount Washington
August 9, 2017 -- Ashley and I hike Mount Washington via Tuckerman Ravine and Lion Head trails (on the ascent), Tuckerman Ravine (descent).
At 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States. While not a particularly tall mountain, its notoriously erratic weather has caught many a hiker off guard (claiming nearly 150 lives since 1849).
Fortunately for Ashley and I, we picked a great day to hike up the Mountain. Neither of us had ever hiked Washington before (unless you count my brief Traverse across Washington during The Presidential Traverse just a few months earlier https://youtu.be/2QFnpGVKUVQ). Tuckerman Ravine Trail is the most common hiking trail to the summit. My buddy Nick recommended we take Lion Head trail where it veers off from Tuckerman and we're so glad we did. We were nearly alone on the trail and the views were fantastic. We loved the little scrambling sections... Seeing the clouds and fog roll in near the lip of Tuckerman Ravine was a great way to experience the rapid changes in weather Washington is famous for. Tuckerman Trail on the way down started to get fairly congested. I would probably look to try some alternate trails to change things up next time, but the views in the Ravine are amazing (not a surprise it's so popular!).
It took us 2:58 to summit. 2:30 descent.

We'll be back again some day (probably with the kids!).
