To the ego the present doesn't exists. It is always focused on keeping the past alive because without the past; who are you? It also wants to keep itself alive in the future hoping that one day when this or that happens; I’m going to be okay.

The word ‘ego’ is often misunderstood. Most people think ego means being selfish. Even though there is some truth in that, the ego really means the identification of yourself through the mind, made by the environment, culture, innovation and circumstances.

However, you are not your mind. Therefore, the ego is a false-self. In other words, the ego is what you think you are, instead of who you actually are. Your mind is simply an instrument, a tool. The mind is there for a specific task, and when that task has been completed, you lay it down.
