Tanegashima Teppo: Matchlocks & Gunpowder Warfare in the Sengoku Jidai

In 1543, Portuguese merchants parted with three of their matchlocks when they landed on the Japanese island of Tanegashima. This was not the first encounter the Japanese had with matchlocks, but the introduction of Portuguese style firearms into the Sengoku Jidai would build on a military revolution that had already occurred one hundred years previously, to transform Japan forever.
